"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us…For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!" Romans 5:8 & 10

The Word of God is full of understated truths that have enormous consequences to mankind. Romans 5:8 is one of these. In a few short words the whole message of God’s intervention in time and humanity is spelt out. When the verse says ‘Christ died for us’ while we were sinners, we can understand something of what a sinner is. We have some idea of the power of sin, how bad sin can be, the results of sin and generally what it feels like to be a sinner. As the Bible says in Psalm 51:5, ‘Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me’.

However when God wanted to show his love to us by offering up his son we are shaken by the implications of this demonstration of a love of which we have little understanding. Have you experienced the pain of losing a son, a daughter, a wife or a husband? It can be too hard to bear and leaves a hole that can never be filled. The truth is that God not only did this by choice for a people unfit for his presence but he did this for the very people who caused his son’s death. More than that, God stood by while he allowed people to inflict as much pain and suffering as possible onto his son prior to his death.

What love was shown to us by the Father of all creation as he saw and allowed the treatment dealt out to his Son! As we, from time to time, go through our own time of loss and suffering it is good to know that God understands as one who has been there and felt the very pain we endure. Romans 5:10 is a comfort: If God loved us so much by dying for us, how much more will he love us by living for us!
