In May 2003, five children were found on the streets of Ndola begging for money. The sight of dusty faces and rags on children begging on the streets is a typical sight in Ndola, however there was something different about this group. This group of street children consisted of four girls and one boy ranging from 8 to 12 years of age. The unusual part was that four young girls were begging without an adult with them. They had all been forced into the streets: a heartbreaking consequence of poverty.
Kelvin, the oldest and only boy in the group, was fiercely protective of his younger sisters and friends and had been in many fights protecting them all from other street children. He had become proficient at begging and knew what he had to do to protect himself and his friends.
Two and a Half Years Later… Over the past few months Grace and Truth Baptist Church, where many of the Eagles Wings children attend, have held baptismal classes. At the conclusion of these classes, on the 18th of September, 2005, Kelvin and his younger sisters and friends who he protected on the streets were part of a group of 12 from Eagles Wings Full Care Program that were baptized! It was a great day for all and many people were witnesses to the fact that these children had been spared and now live a new life in Christ! Church finished around noon that day and then the whole church walked to MMM International for the baptisms. Lackson spoke of the scriptural significance of what was to take place and then Teen Missions assisted in performing the baptisms. The weather was hot but comfortable and as each child rose out of the water there was singing and cheering, Zambian style! The names of the children and young adults baptized were Suzyo, Kelvin, Peter, James, George, Thelma, Cecilia, Grace, Sara, Ethel, Agnus and Eliza. News Just In… Some children in our Full Care Program have just been diagnosed with Bilharzia. We are uncertain how long they have been infected with the disease but are certain that it has come from swimming in the local river. Our concern is not just for these children, but for the thousands of people in our community that swim, wash and bathe in the river on a daily basis. In addition to this a large storm came through and damaged some of the buildings at the Centre. Lackson Reports: ‘We are praying about how to treat them. Now the problem is, if the kids at the Centre are infected, then how many kids are infected in the community because they also swim in the same stream? Our only prayer is that the Lord may provide the means of treating these kids in the community if they have to be treated.’
‘We had a great flash flood last night when it was raining. Guess what? Half of the roof on our house was blown off. David's room and the girl's were like as if you are in an ocean, so Burton, Peter and Jimmy worked almost the whole night putting back the roofing sheets back on the house.’ Please be in prayer about these situations.
