Page 2 of 3 Where did they go and what did they see?So what an opportunity this trip was for these children ? in a rickety old bus, they travelled 10 hours to Livingstone. They visited the incredible Zambezi River and Victoria Falls, everyone getting drenched from the spray. They enjoyed a river cruise, visited a crocodile farm, game park as well as the Livingstone Museum. In between were face-painting, treasure hunts (the younger children thought it was Christmas having found a handful of lollies each!), bonfires as well as a bungy jump, elephant ride and microlight flight for 3 very ecstatic winners of hotly-contested competitions with much yelling and a little sulking! And despite their backgrounds, these beautiful children continually proved themselves to be just like children the world over, some boys not being happy at all that they?d been put in groups of 4 with girls, others fighting at various stages, one boy being disciplined for cutting a girl?s ear, another running away briefly after being disciplined and another being seriously upset when a pillow fight took place on his bed! And yes, this was the trip of a lifetime for them, but it was in no way a luxury tour by western standards and the trip as well as time at the farm was an amazing eye-opener for our 9 foreign leaders from Australia and the US. During the trip the group stayed in very meagre conditions in the local Baptist Church, sharing mattresses and going without the cold showers for many days. Plain bread and cordial was the staple lunch and washing up took place under a cool tap outside. Smells, sounds and memories will stay with them all forever and photos are so inadequate to portray their experiences. |
