Praise & Prayer June 08 Print E-mail

"When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building a temple for the Lord, the God of Israel, they came to Zerubbable and to the heads of the families and said, “Let us help you build, because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to him since the time of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us here.” Ezra 4:1 – 2

When we seek to do a work for God we need to be wise that we join with those that are genuine in their faith and have no hidden agendas. Words can sound nice, but as we see in this example from Ezra, the enemies of the Israelites hid their true motives and finally managed to achieve their agenda, totally stopping the work on the temple for sixteen years. See what sort of fruit is being produced, not just what words are being presented.

FROM PREVIOUS UPDATES

Land Purchase Stage 3 and 4

There has been no movement on land ownership for Stages 3 and 4 of the school over the past month.

Please Pray

  • That we may either once and for all be given the land or have the wisdom to know what to do as an alternative.

Camp 2008

Camp 2008 leaders from International Teams began their training on Monday 23rd of June in Sydney, Australia. This training prepares the team for the various challenges that lay ahead on the whole experience. They departed for Zambia on the 25th of June.

Please Pray

  • That children will come to know Christ as a result of His Gospel being clearly communicated throughout Camp 2008.
  • That the team’s time before Camp, as they visit various ministries around Ndola, will be fruitful.
  • That Camp 2008 will have a huge impact on both leaders and children.
  • For Clayton as he deals with a new campsite and new staff at Safpar, a business that contributes and organizes many of the camp activities.
  • For Clayton, as his laptop was completely destroyed after an accident in the office. He has lost all his Camp information, other than some hard copy back ups.
  • For safety on the journey from Ndola to Livingstone and back and safety as the team participates in various activities.
  • For positive attitudes and open hearts for all involved in Camp 2008.

Vice Principal Position

Following prayer and careful consideration, Daniel has conducted interviews with the current teachers to understand their vision and position in relation to Eagles Wings. He has also advertised for a new teacher who will fill the classroom teaching position that will be vacant after the promotion. All that is remaining is careful consideration and discussion with the Management Team as Daniel chooses his Vice Principal.

Please Pray

  • That Daniel may have a real sense of who is the right person for the position.
  • For a new teacher. Pray that they may have a real heart for the vision of Eagles Wings.

Documentary Launch

Please continue to pray for the Ubuntu: The Street Child Story launch in Zambia on the 19th of July. Reid will be traveling back to Zambia on the 2nd of July to help finish the organizing process for this launch.

Educational Support - Container

Over the past few months we have been raising support for supplies to educate children within our Education Program. Such supplies include chairs, shoes, socks, uniforms, books and stationary. This comes to a total of $50 per child. We set a goal to get 400 donors to donate $50 each to cover 400 children for a two year period. We will purchase all of these supplies in Australia and ship the container that Victoria Point Baptist is organizing for Eagles Wings. Savings are substantial and the quality of goods cannot be compared to any Zambian goods, so we are extremely thankful for this opportunity.

Praise God

  • That 236 children have been supported as of the 23rd of June.

Please pray

  • For the remaining 164 children yet to be supported. Pray that we may find donors.

NEW PRAISE & PRAYER POINTS

Child Health Week

Praise God for our children who impressively represented our school in two different events held on the 16th of June. In the first ceremony, Eagles Wings children were among hundreds of students who participated in the launch of Child Health Week at Twapia clinic, organized by the Ministry of Health. The second group of children participated in a soccer match, organized by the Ministry of Youth and Child Development, to commemorate African Children’s Day at the civic centre in town. The government wants to revisit the voting age and reduce it from 18 to 16 and because of this they want to start involving children in decision making. They are therefore working hand in hand with children on a community level and Eagles Wings children were privileged to be among the first children to be involved.

Staff Training - Family Program

Family Program staff, along with one of our teaching staff, completed special training to help children in crisis find healing and hope. The training went for five days. The staff who attended the training testified that it will help improve the running of the Family Program. Becky Bee from Rainbow of Hope in Australia has been offering this training in other Africa countries like the Congo and Uganda. Lackson, Clayton, Augustine, Anna and David at Eagles Wings participated in this training.

Praise God

  • For this training, which we hope will improve what we do within our Family Program.

Community Issue – Alcohol

There is need for prayer for two boys from our grade two class, James (10) and Matthew (13)*. They are apparently cousins. James is an orphan who is staying with his grandparents. Matthew is the first born of a poor family. Both families live in the same community. It has come to the attention of Sylvia, our grade two teacher, that the grandparents send the two boys into the local beer shops to buy beer for them. The boys are drinking some of the beer and have been seen dancing drunk around the small local tavern. Unfortunately, this has become a habit for a few children coming from the compounds who have guardians that drink. Sylvia called for the grandparents as soon as she heard of the issue, but it was all in vain. We are considering the victim support unit to help children facing such cases of abuse.

Please Pray

  • For these boys. Pray that God would convict them about their choices.
  • For Sylvia, as she tries to counsel and help in this issue.
  • That parents and guardians would make wise, responsible choices as they raise their children. We have had police officers, who form part of a victim support unit, visit to raise awareness among parents and children about the rights of children and the duties of parents and guardians.

Break the Cycle

Eagles Wings has partnered with Be a Hero Australia and Micah Challenge to promote the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that the United Nations have established to halve world poverty by 2015. To promote the MDGs, which will help to bring freedom and justice to millions of children around the world, we are organizing a cycling event aptly named Break the Cycle. The event will start in Brisbane and end in Canberra in time for the start of Anti Poverty week. Break the Cycle will be 1481 km of cycling all in the name of children in poverty. There is an opportunity for keen cyclists to take part but we only have a limited number of 20 cyclists this year. If you are interested, please email info@ ewafrica.org for a participation form. Please pray for this event as it unfolds. It is a new event and therefore will have some unforeseen issues. Organizers will need a lot of prayer for wisdom and strength to not only make this a success for the sake of the children, but also to make the distance on a bike!

Prayer Points

Sick Girl in Family Program

Please pray for Emily* from our Family Program who has been sick for some time. She is believed to be suffering from juvenile arthritis and many times the condition is so critical that she misses school. The doctor has not come up with a proper diagnosis yet. Lately, she has shown some small signs of improvement.

Please Pray

  • For healing for Emily.
  • Pray for wisdom from the doctors and that they would give a proper diagnosis of the situation.

Click here to view video NOTE: Just before sending this latest Praise and Prayer, Emily’s condition deteriorated further. Staff may have to take her to Lusaka for further treatment. Please be in prayer for this precious child, that God’s hand will cover her in healing.

Government Inspections

Continue praying that everything will go well when the Government inspector visits us sometime next week for the Education Program.

Partnership with Bracken Ridge Baptist Church

On Sunday 29th of June, Eagles Wings will be signing a partnership with Bracken Ridge Baptist Church. It is the next step on a journey that has taken place with their leaders over the past few months. It is also a beginning - our first partnership for the Acts Initiative in Australia - and we look forward to the impact that this will have on the new Acts Initiative, which looks to empower local churches throughout Southern Africa. Initially Bracken Ridge Baptist will fund a social worker in a local church ministry within Lesotho called Love in Action - Lesotho. They will then look at a local church in Zambia.

Please Pray

  • For increasing friendships and vision for this new partnership.

Praise God

  • That He has brought about this partnership for the benefit of orphans and vulnerable children who we know He loves so much.
