God directs us in various ways. He knows us through and through and understands how we think. Sometimes we need to be directed with a big stick and sometimes with a ‘carrot’. Sometimes there is the need to motivate us and direct us very forcefully. In Moses’ case the fear of death was a great motivator to get him to move to where he would meet his wife and father-in-law, Jethro. For many of us our first experience with God was through some crisis or painful experience which totally changes our direction and mission in life.

It is very often the case that we live our lives with a small view of our circumstances. The prodigal son is an example of such a view. He saw himself as unloved, friendless, poor, destitute, unworthy, hungry, disgraced, humiliated and shamed with no hope of redemption or a future. In addition he experienced the physical environment of being homeless, foodless, filthy and jobless! Often we are no different and can feel defeated, burdened, depressed, joyless, uncared for and with no sense of purpose and hope.
