"After Rehoboam’s position as king was established and he had become strong, he and all Israel with him abandoned the law of the LORD." 2 Chronicles 12:1
Rehoboam worked hard to establish the Kingdom of Judah, making it strong and safe by listening to the voice of God through the prophet Shemaiah during early years of struggle. It is one thing to walk with God through the valleys of struggle and suffering but there is nothing more difficult than staying close to God on the mountains of plenty. Rehoboam choose not to follow God in the good times.

The king of Israel answered, “Tell him: ‘One who puts on his armor should not boast like one who takes it off.’" I Kings 20:11
There are not many wise sayings that came from the lips of Ahab, King
of Israel, but this was one of them. It is similar to a saying of Paul
in 2 Timothy 4:7-8, ‘I have fought the good fight, I have finished the
race, I have kept the faith…now there is in store for me the crown of
righteousness…’ At this stage, Paul is at the point of ‘taking off his
armor’.

went down to the battle. All will share alike.” 1 Samuel 30:23-34

“Joshua, it was forty-five years ago that the LORD told Moses to
make Prayer Focus that promise, and now I am eighty-five. Even though
Israel has moved from place to place in the desert, the LORD has kept
me alive all this time as he said he would. I’m just as strong today as
I was then, and I can still fight as well in battle. So I’m asking you
for the hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You were
there. You heard the other spies talk about that part of the hill
country and the large, walled towns where the Anakim live. But maybe
the LORD will help me take their land, just as he promised.” Joshua
prayed that God would help Caleb, then he gave Hebron to Caleb and his
descendants. Joshua 14:10-13
